I thought these chapters showed us like how he could become a soldier from who he was before. I got really confused about the stump part, like where his friend fell on the stump and he took him off the stump.
When the captain slit the prisoner’s throat and all the people cheered for the captain, and wanted to be just like him. Then they had the contest and Ishmael really really really wanted to participate in it. Then he got chosen, and he really wanted to win, and he did, and he was celebrating. I mean, yeah its okay to celebrate when you when a contest, but like not that kind of contest in my opinion.
The drugs…were just…stupid. He could have said no to at least the marijuana, and the “brown brown.” He might not have been able to say no to the white tablets, but like he wouldn’t be addicted to him like he is now.

His friend was on a stump because an RPG blew up near him and he got thrown on it and was almost dead. Also, I don't think he could have said no, in the first place he was being told they would help and as a child with bad judgement skills already he believed the adults. Also, after he got addicted to them it would be really hard to stop especially without a rehab center.
