A long way gone--chap. 1 and 2

I felt like the first two chapters were rather graphic, especially in the beginning of chapter 2, like when they were talking about viewing the people with all their legs and arms cut off, their intestines spilling out, their brains coming out of their noses and ears, and how their eyes were redder than the blood that was coming out of them. I thought the sentence that went over that was really disgusting, because I was like picturing how the people would look like, and I just was like oh my word… That’s pretty gross. I mean like especially for just walking down the street and seeing them sprawled around like that that would surely creep me out! Also, when he removed the sheet and it was him; my reaction to that was like okay??? Did he dream that this happened back then or like in present day, so I got kind of confused in the second chapter about what was going on.
In the first chapter though, I could kind of relate to what he was saying in a way, because like I didn’t really know about some stuff that was going on around me, like for example, I didn’t hear about the twin towers being attacked until I was in the 4th grade, even though it happened while I was in 2nd grade. So, no, I can’t relate to him directly he knew what was going on he just never thought it would bleed into his home like it did.

The description in the beginning of chapter two also disgusted me. And to answer your question, he was having a nightmare in present day about what had happened back when he was a child soldier, and it was meant to be that symbolism that when he became a soldier how part of him had died, and it would never come back.

I could agree with you completely. Chapter 2 seemed pretty graphic and I had to stop every once in awhile because I could start to imagine what the author was describing. Chapter 1 seemed much more easier to relate to.

Amber, good job. It kinda freaked me out also. My mouth dropped and i said "ew" out loud when I read the part about the intestines falling out and what not. But I know that it was necessary in a way for us to get a feel for what he was looking at. I don't know what I would have done if I was Ishmael.

Great point about the Twin Towers and how we are sometimes isolated from sad things even in our own society. I agree 100% about the graphic scene that you mention. Feel free to skip these!
